WHAT IS A MACULAR HOLE?

macular hole is usually  a small often round break in the macula, located in the area with sharpest vision of the eye's light-sensitive tissue called the retina. The function of the macula is sharp, central vision for appreciating  fine detail like recognising faces, driving and reading. A macular hole can cause blurred and distorted central vision. Some patients can still read if they turn their eye slightly to either side (eccentric fixation).

What causes it?

Trauma in young patients, often male

It can be age related as the jelly at the back of your eye shrinks or separate from the retina. It can pull a small retina with it

Or your light sensitive cells in the macula can separate or spread apart

Can a macular hole be repaired ?

Yes. For this you will need to have a vitrectomy. Age related macula holes have an excellent prognosis OF over 90% success rate your ophthalmologist will perform a peel of your Internal Limiting Membrane. An internal bandage usually gas is used and you will need to lie face down or on either side to facilitate healing of your macula hole.
