EYE CARE DOCTOR
WHAT IS AN EPIRETINAL MEMBRANE?
ERM
An epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a semi-translucent, avascular, membrane that grows on the inner retinal surface
What causes an epiretinal membrane?
Most epiretinal membranes happen because the vitreous (the jelly inside) pulls away from the retina. This most commonly happens to people over the age of 50. The membrane may also form following eye surgery or inflammation inside the eye. It causes distortion in vision where straight lines appear wavy.
How is an epiretinal membrane treated?
With a vitrectomy and an epiretinal membrane peel.
