Why must I have laser?

Laser therapy will stabilise your central vision as a diabetic patient. It will also stop your retina from growing abnormal vessels that leak, bleed and cause blurry vision.

What does laser do for diabetic patients?

Laser is photocoagulation. It “burns” parts your retina in an attempt to match your oxygenation retinal needs to your blood supply. Growth of abnormal vessels occurs when there is a mismatch where the retinal perfusion demand is greater than blood supply (perfusion). Laser is also useful if central vision is affected and there is leakage to treat that area and to facilitate oxygenation and improved vision. Laser is not a once of treatment, it is titrated over time according to patient’s response and performed until there is no more room for further laser or diabetic eye becomes quiescent (inactive).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Some patients fall asleep during laser therapy sessions - it is  performed in a dark room. Some patients are uncomfortable throughout the procedure. So each patient is different.
